Ode To Dorothy; Her Final Frame.
This photo below is the final frame of my beloved Dorothy, my Digital Rebel 300D. Her last photographic click. This white rose from our home rose garden was her grand finale. After several years of faithful companionship, her second shutter has suddenly refused to operate. Her well worn camera body shows her age and her willingness to perform in a variety of harsh environments. Yes, she was missing a knob here and has several scratches there, but she proved herself as a tried and true DSLR camera. While surgery and subsequent rehab are an option, I have felt it best to let Dorothy end her career on a strong note.
Typically, flowers aren't my subject matter of choice, but I think it is fitting that she performed in such a manner right up to the end, regardless of the subject. The roses are compliments of the only person to come between Dorothy and me; my wife. These gorgeous roses are just a sampling of the many that Dorothy and I have photographed as a team over the past six years.
Dorothy lived a good and full digital life, providing her photographer with countless hours of photographic pleasure. She will join her analog film relatives on the display shelf here at home. Aunt Edna (Canon AE-1p) and Uncle Albert (Canon A-1) will be flanking her on the SLR shelf.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her brother Kit (18-55mm kit lens). Kit fell to his death while on a trackside mission in Fullerton, CA. Sadly, Kit rolled into the path of an oncoming Toyota Camry and was smashed to smithereens. Dorothy is survived by Seventeen (17-40mm L lens, Kit's replacement) and Big Dan (the 75-300mm telephoto lens). Big Dan was on duty at the time of Dorothy's passing, and is credited along with Dorothy for this final image.
May Dorothy Rest In Peace.

The local bicycling community in Orange County wheeled over to the GO,RILLA GALLERY in Santa Ana, California for a one day art exhibit. The show was touted as, "A group art show that explores the many facets of bicycles and the curious cultures surrounding them." After some difficulty in finding the loft gallery, I arrived and began to take in the interesting toy boutique (Go-ZILLA) on the first floor of the loft.
The BIKE CURIOUS? exhibit filled the second and third floors of the store front loft on North Main Street, with bicyclists and art lovers spilling in the front courtyard and out the service entrance. The first 25 bicyclists were rewarded with a signed stencil art piece, and THE BICYCLE TREE provided free bike check-ups for attendees that rode to the art show. Therefore, there were plenty of bikes at both entrances of the boutique and art gallery. The free Fat Tire Beer may have also been a contributing factor to the strong turnout that the gallery enjoyed.
I wandered about with camera in hand. The resulting images can be found through the BICYCLING section of the GALLERY page. There was a pleasant mix of mediums, including several restored bicycles to compliment the hanging pieces. I hope you find my photographs as interesting as I found the art show to be. Thanks for taking a look.

As a Level One Powertrain dealer, I attended the annual summit conference hosted by General Motors. I took advantage of the opportunities for photography at the Lincoln Centre campus that is home to the Hilton and three high rise office buildings. Also included in the conference was a tour of an engine rebuilding facility in Carrollton, Texas.

My profession takes me to the heart of Motor City for a National Powertrain convention. I am eager for the visit to General Motors' Heritage Museum that houses some 900 GM autos, trucks, and concept cars. Most of the vehicles are in showroom condition and cameras are encouraged.

My annual trek to San Jose to visit my Dad and his wife occurs over New Year's weekend each year. On the slate for this year's visit is to head over to California's Gold Country to find his childhood homes in Plymouth and Placerville. Then head north to the town of gold, Oroville, to check out the Oroville Dam, it's switch yard, the visitor's center, and then end the day on the Middle Fork Bridge.

Jeanine and I will be driving the Vibe up to Napa Valley for an extended weekend in California's Wine Country. We'll be staying at the new resort in town, the Meritage. The agenda has wine tasting, dinner in a wine cave, and a ride on the wine train. We also hope to meet up with my cousin and his family for picnic lunch after discovering some of the area's history.
Wine, wine, wine....

The annual summer event for the Fullerton Foamers %26 Foto Society at BNSF Trainhouse in Yorba Linda. Several multimedia presentations are on the agenda, as well as pizza, bass-dogs, and other quality railfan food items. Hopefully, the "Great Wall of Yang-Ming" will not be in place to block our view of the rail action.

Site number 13 of the Green Valley Campground will be our home for July 21-23 2006. Maybe a bike ride, a hike, or even some fishing will help the time pass in the San Bernardino Mtns. But then again, we may just laze around camp.

I guess this would qualify as a current event, as I am currently in Beaufort South Carolina spending a week with my son and his wife at their home. So far I have enjoyed the slower pace and the wonderful hospitality that my hosts have provided. However, the sauna like weather leaves something to be desired.
I am on my third day here already, but have only clicked off a few photographs, maybe ten. I think today will begin my photographic adventure. I will add images to the site in the Captured Digital Imagery section of the gallery, under the Carolina heading.
High water marks thus far would be the Ultimate Burger at Friendly's, the "delayed baggage" scenario, and walking in a downpour in the old part of town by the river.

No, not Cinco de Mayo, Cinco de Needles. The title is derived from this being my fifth photographic adventure along the Needles Subdivision of the BNSF Railway. This took place on April 14th and 15th of 2006.
The days before the planned event were filled with showers of rain throughout the LA Basin, creeping to points east. Thankfully, by Friday evening, the skies cleared to allow for my first attempt at lunar photography. Several challenges were met and addressed the best they could in the midst of the Mojave Desert. My experimenting with a new style of photography in the dark and in the wind lead to some frustration and only a few successes. However, on the plus side were the lessons learned in this new arena of photography that is measured in minutes rather than in fractions of a second.
The photographic results have been assembled in a streaming ProShow multimedia presentation on the photodex.com website.

Winterail 2006
Stockton, California
March 12, 2006
Jeff Bass' revised ProShow multimedia presentation, "Tones, Textures, Colors, Faces... Railroading" has been accepted as a digital presentation for Winterail 2006. Many of the images found here in the TheImageGateway gallery are featured in Jeff's presentation of railroad environments.
These railroad environments are filled with industrial symmetry, power, grit, humanity and beauty. It is Jeff's aim to incorporate these basic elements of life into presentation by capturing ordinary railroad scenes and events with a perspective that keeps viewers’ eyes lingering on the images.

Troy, New York
August 19 to 26, 2005
My wife and I travelled to Troy, New York to hand-deliver our middle daughter to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for her college career. Most of our time was consumed on campus, but I did get the opportunity to wander about Troy with camera. The photographic results of this trip can viewed in the EXPEDITIONS gallery.

After a mishap at work, the orthopedic surgeons have placed me on the DL with a fractured left wrist and fractured right elbow. Recovery and healing is moving along at a slow, but steady pace, giving me time to add a few images to the website.

After a few anxious moments, my fears were put to rest as my presentation went off without a hiccup. Since I poured myself into that presentation and had doubts regarding how it would be received. The show is me; my art, my photography... How I see railroading. I am glad that it was enjoyed by the audience.
Here is one GorgeRail 2005 attendee's review:
"Those of you who couldn''t attend GorgeRail 2005 on Saturday evening in The Dalles, OR, missed a rare experience. Standouts among the 11 presentations were Drew Mitchem''s Western Canada-Western Plains show and Jeff Bass' absolutely stunning "Urban Southern California" program, an audiovisual symphony in five movements."
